It is an oral tablet and is offered in a standard oral tablet form. The UK has taken the lead off the world’s biggest pharmaceutical firm by selling its ‘Viagra’ (sildenafil) prescription-only tablets.
The drug – which is sold over-the-counter – is not recommended to treat erectile dysfunction, but rather has the potential to help men with the condition, which is more common in women. However, the company said its erectile dysfunction drug, which costs a staggering £30 for a month’s supply, is not a ‘miracle cure’ for the condition.
The UK-based firm said it was ‘reassuring’ the pharmacy that it was selling ‘Viagra’ over-the-counter as part of a ‘safe and legal’ effort to ensure that it is legal and not unsafe.
‘It is a well-known fact that most people suffer from erectile dysfunction when they are not able to get or keep an erection. In fact, Viagra and other similar prescription-only drugs are a very popular option for many men,’ said the head of product development for the UK’s biggest prescription-only pharmacy, the PharmacyChecker. ‘This is just a small but growing number of men who suffer from ED, who are not able to get an erection, or are unable to maintain a healthy or firm erection for a long period of time.
The drug has been prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction since the 1980s and has been shown to help men with impotence and improve their sexual performance.
In April this year, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced it had sold Pfizer’s ‘Viagra’ tablets to the company, after the company agreed to pay £50m to settle allegations that it illegally supplied the drug to the UK market by marketing it as a treatment for the condition. The MHRA said it had concluded that the product contained the active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, and that its marketing authorisation was granted.
‘The UK pharmaceutical industry is pleased to have acted responsibly in relation to the sale of the product,’ the MHRA said. ‘This product is an example of the expertise and judgement that pharmaceutical companies have shown to be necessary to protect patients and to ensure that their products are safe and of high quality.
‘The MHRA’s decision to divest the pharmaceuticals to the UK firm was welcomed as it reflected the company’s longstanding commitment to a long-term and responsible relationship with patients and healthcare providers. The agreement also highlighted the company’s ongoing dedication to providing a high-quality, affordable, and effective solution to the healthcare needs of its customers.
‘In a world where patients have to rely on the help of specialists, and in many instances, medicines that have been proven to work well for their particular circumstances, the company has acted responsibly in this case,’ the MHRA added.
A Texas woman has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for unlawfully purchasing anabolic and androgenic steroids from a Nevada brothel. An indictment alleges the former had “used” and imported the drugs to boost his virility.
In a news release, Assistant U. S. Attorney Amy Greenlee said the defendant “continually engaged in illegal and dangerous business activities” and was “attempting to import and distribute steroids from Nevada brothels.”
The state’s attorney’s office said the defendant “committed several criminal offences, including trafficking in steroids and the distribution of steroids.”
The defendant was sentenced to one year and a half in federal custody and ordered to pay $1.4 million in restitution. She is scheduled to appear in the U. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on March 13.
The U. Attorney’s office announced in January the federal prosecution was having no information regarding the defendant’s involvement in another case.
The investigation into the case began after the case was investigated by U. prosecutors in 2007. U. Attorney Jennifer A. Schmitt said the investigation will continue and the case will be continued until March 11.
“This is an investigation that’s focused on the defendant’s business activities,” said Schmitt. “This case is a result of that investigation.”
Attorney’s Office is the federal agency responsible for prosecuting criminal cases.
